My first profile and interview with Brooklyn based jewelry maker and comic illustrator Kat Roberts: plus it does not end there, her talents are innumerable, not to mention, she is funny, stylish, eccentric, and totally one of a kind. She is the type of filly you run into at very cool vintage store and she leaves an imprint, and you might think to yourself "I will never meet another girl like her". Well, it is true, you won't and I hope you enjoy reading about her and hopefully snatching up some of her jewels and little masterpieces.

So I came up with ten questions that I refer to as the Proustian/ Robaroodian Questionnaire. This will allow you to get a bird's eye view into what inspires Kat and makes her a part of what I refer to as the "rainbow connection". Yes, it is what Kermit sings about, and it's awesome. And everyone should want to be a card carrying member.

Who are your favorite
heroines in fiction and if you could dress like one of them, how would you
achieve this look?
Maggie
and Hopey, from Love and Rockets
Margarita, from the Master and Margarita
Eowyn,
from Lord of the Rings
Edna
Pontellier, from The Awakening
I’d
probably choose to dress like Eowyn. I love the idea of the elegant warrior
woman. My interpretation would involve striking a balance between refinement
and utility.
Where and how do you draw
your inspiration, how do you stay illuminated?
Hard
to say any one source in particular, it seems to be everywhere.
How would you like to die
and what would you want to be mentioned?
Unafraid.
I’d want mentioned that I really loved being alive and that I used my time here
to live exactly the way I wanted to.
What are your
favorite qualities in women?
Honesty
and bold spirits.
What is your
favorite scent or fragrance and why?
Of
fragrances in general, the smell of coffee being brewed is instant happiness to
me.
As
for scents that I like to wear, generally it’s lavender or rose oil. I’m into
keeping it simple these days.
If you could collaborate
with one designer who would it be and why?
It’s
really hard not say Alexander McQueen. Seeing the Savage Beauty exhibition
at the MET this summer solidified him as my favorite, ever. To have had the
opportunity to work in the presence of that sort of vision and skillful ability
to communicate raw expression seems profound in a way that I can’t imagine with
anyone else.
Among
living designers, it would be Vivienne Westwood. I’m as obsessed by the woman
as I am her clothing. She has incredible ability for longevity and relevance as
an artist, in addition to her being a committed activist. She personifies the
type of woman I aspire to be.
If you could eat one food
everyday for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It’s
a toss up between nachos and vegetable soup. The two of them comprise the majority
of my diet as it. I’m not sure whether that’s gross or awesome.
What is your
most celebrated attribute?
I stay excited.
Do you have a
muse, if so who and why?
So
long as I give myself the space and time I need to do the work, everything else
always seems to fall in place. The more I do, the more I want to do. It’s a
happy cycle.
***Oh my goodness, do y'all love her as much as I do. I swanny she made me want to look in the mirror and do a total attitude make-over. I need a little Kat to carry around in the other pocket Bruno Mars isn't in and make me happy, and maybe just maybe I could bring them out together and they could harmonize for me...a girl can dream, right, Kermie.
Godspeed,

Kat Roberts is an artist living in Brooklyn, NY, who stays crazy busy as a mom, professional accessories designer, teaching people to make shoe and handbags, writing for BurdaStyle, creating comics, thrift store shopping and as an avid maker of things. She's most happy when able to combine as many of these things as possible into a single project. Her line of jewelry and accessories, Whitehaus, is created using unusual combinations if colors, materials and various vintage and recycled pieces. All pieces are crafted by hand and most are one of a kind.
Her other great passion is creative recycling. Her blog, "We Can Re-Do It", catalogues this obsession with repurposing and includes free tutorials.
